Descrição do evento

The idea behind LitChat is to provide learners of English with an opportunity to practice the language in a light way and in a relaxed environment by reading and discussing literary texts, especially short stories.

The sessions happen online every week and last for one hour and a half. Like in a book club, readings should be done prior to the meetings so that more time is allotted for discussion. Sessions start with a brief presentation/contextualization of the authors and their work, followed by the discussion. Aspects of the English language which are literarily relevant can also be addressed. Groups are limited to ten people, so that everybody gets a chance to speak.

Participants can practice all the four skills: reading by getting in touch with the short story of the week, listening and speaking by taking part in the weekly meetings, and writing by taking part in the instagram discussions @lit.chat and working on the optional weekly writing proposals.

FEBRUARY/2023: CARNIVAL STORIES - READING LIST

You can choose to take part in sessions individually or in the three sessions of the month. If you are not familiar with the CEFR, take this test to find out what level of proficiency you are closer to: https://www.cambridgeenglish.org/test-your-english/.

  • February 6th: "The Secret Woman" (1924/1975), by Colette (translation by Margaret Crosland) - recommended level B1
  • February 13th: "Dressing up for the Carnival" (2000), by Carol Shields - recommended level B2
  • February 27th: "Carnival", by Karen Blixen - recommended level C1/C2 (This is a 64-page short story, so I recommend you start reading it as soon as possible.)

As the main purpose of the sessions is to take active part in the debate about the literary works in question, and also due to copyright matters, sessions will not be recorded. If you have any questions, write to [email protected]. Thank you.

Sobre o produtor

LitChat - Thais Giammarco

I have been a teacher of English for over 20 years and I have noticed that students lack the opportunity to practice the language in a light way and in a relaxed environment before they actually have to use it in professional or academic situations. As a literature lover, I also think we can all learn a lot with and from literature. LitChat aims to offer the opportunity for people to read and reflect about literary works in English, and also to engage in discussions and make new connections.
